What You Need to Get Started:
- A PPP Dial-Up account from
Northwest Advantage
- The FreePPP Disk
- Your Network/PPP Login and
Password
- MacOS 7.0.1 (w/MacTCP Installed),
or MacOS 7.5+
Step 1: Install the FreePPP
Software
- Restart your computer with
the Shift key held down.
- This will restart your computer
with all system extensions turned off.
- When booting is complete,
insert the FreePPP Installation Disk into your drive.
- Double Click the Disk Icon
(to open it's window)
- Locate the FreePPP Installer
Icon
in the window and double-click it.
- When the first screen appears,
read the instructions, save or print them, if you like, and then click
Continue.
- Press the mouse button to
clear the installer copyright screen. The Install Options Screen will
then appear.
- Generally you will want
to stay with the standard installation, so click Install for the default.
- Once the installation has
finished, allow the machine to restart and load the required extensions
Step 2: Configure FreePPP
•Under the Apple
Menu, select Control Panels, and then Config PPP from the sub menu.
- Select the serial
port your modem is connected to under the Port Name pull down menu.
This will usually be the Modem Port (the socket in the back of your
computer with the little "phone & morse code" icon by it). If the
modem is on the Printer Port (has a little "printer" icon by it), you
should select that.
- Set the Idle Timeout
(minutes) pull down menu to None.
- Click New...
to configure the PPP server selection for your account
- Under PPP Server
Name enter CT PPP
(or Northwest
Advantage - this is just a short, descriptive name)
- Set your Port Speed.
- Older (Non-PowerMac)
Machines may have problems with speeds over 38400 unless they are
running System 7.55 or higher
- 14.4 modem
users should select 38400
- 28.8/33.6 modem
users can select between 38400 & 57600
- 56K modem users
can select 115200
- Set your Flow
Control.
- 14.4 Modems
(and slower) should go with the CTS Only selection.
- 28.8 Modems
(and faster) should go with the CTS/RTS (DTR) selection.
- Confirm the local
dial-up number in Phone num is correct for your location
- Insert the appropriate
Modem Initialization String for your modem into the Modem Init blank.
This a short string of characters usually starting with at&f...
which conveys configuration information to your modem. Call Northwest
Advantage tech support if you can't find one for your modem. Make sure
you have your modem model name and manufacturer ready - those are needed
to look up the proper initialization string.
- Click Authentication...
and the following screen will appear.
- Under Auth. ID:
use the Login (User) Name listed on the front of your Northwest Advantage
Internet Dial-Up Account Information sheet.
- For Password:
enter the Password associated with your PPP/Network Login (also from
the Internet Dial-Up Account Information sheet.)
- Click OK
- Click Done
- Close the main ConfigPPP
window and you're ready to move on
Due to the differences
between Apple's newer and classic networking software you must now determine
whether you are using MacTCP or Open Transport.
(If you don't
know, open your System Folder. Now open and look in your Control Panels
folder for either the MacTCP or TCP/IP icon. Click on the icon that matches
the one you found)
- If
you are using MacTCP (Classic Networking) use Step 3a
- If you are using TCP/IP
(Open Transport Networking) skip Step 3a and go to Step 3b
- If you didn't find
either one you may need to install Networking from your original MacOS
System Installation disk/s (choose Custom Install in the installer to
avoid having to re-copy the whole operating system).
Step 3a: Preparing MacTCP (version
2.4 or Higher)
- Open the MacTCP Control
Panel
- Click the FreePPP
icon to select it (and deselect the others)
- Don't worry about
the IP Address box, it is filled in by the system
- Click More...
to get to the configurations screen.
- Set the Obtain
Address: radio button to Server
- Leave the Gateway
Address box alone (it will be filled in by the Server)
- In the IP Address:
box set the Class: popup to C, and leave the rest alone
and Finally, set up the Domain
Name Server (DNS) Information:
- In the first (upper
left) Domain box enter nwadv.com.
- In it's IP Address
box enter 207.170.237.10
- Click the radio button next
to it.
- Enter period (dot) for the
next domain and enter 207.170.196.61
- Click OK and MacTCP
will save your configuration
- Restart your computer to
see the changes
Step 3b: Preparing Open Transport
TCP/IP
- From the Control
Panels folder double-click the TCP/IP icon, the following screen should
appear. (If it does not look like this try selecting User Mode from
the Edit menu and choose Basic.)
- The Connect Via:
pulldown menu should be set to: FreePPP, MacPPP, or PPP (whichever shows
up in the pulldown menu)
- The Configure
pulldown menu should be set to: Using PPP Server
- If this option is not
available your version of Open Transport needs to be upgraded to 1.1
or newer. Contact your local Apple Support Center for an upgrade.
Macintosh System 7.5.2 came with an incomplete version of the TCP/IP
control panel.
- In the Name
Server Addr box enter 207.170.237.10
- Enter nwadv.com
in the Search domains: box.
- Choose Quit from
File and allow the control panel to save changes
Step 4: Getting Online
- Turn on your modem (not
necessary if it's an internal)
- Open the Config
PPP control panel and click Open.
- When the dial-in window
disappears following the login process, the application is connected
to the Internet and you can launch an Internet application such as Netscape
or Eudora.
- To hang up the
modem and logout from our service choose Close from the ConfigPPP main
page (closing the control panel window will not break the connection
by itself).
Step 5: Getting
Netscape Using The Supplied Fetch 3.0 Program
The following instructions
assume that you have already installed Fetch 3.0 (copied to your hard
drive by the FreePPP installer). Using your communications software, log
on to Northwest Advantage's Internet service, then proceed.
You will:
- Launch Fetch 3.0
- Configure Fetch to access
Netscape's anonymous FTP server
- Download the Netscape Navigator
browser
- Install the Navigator software
Step 5-1: Launch Fetch 3.0
Open the FreePPP folder, then
double-click the Fetch 3.0 icon to launch the application.
Step 5-2: Connecting to Netscape's
ftp server
If you are not already online,
your dialing screen should pop-up and make your connection. Your screen
should now look similar to the one shown below. You may need to
fill in the blanks with information that applies to this task.
- In the text box titled "Host:",
you should enter ftp.netscape.com as shown. Do not include any
spaces in the host name. Actually, because Netscape has quite a few
ftp servers, there can be a number after ftp that can be anything
from 2 - 12, 20, 23, or 26. If you get a message that one site is full
(doesn't connect), try another!
- The text boxes titled "User
ID:" and "Password:" can be left blank to make an anonymous connection.
The program will actually send "anonymous" for the User ID: and your
email address (if Fetch knows it) will be sent as the password.
- In the text box titled "Directory:",
you should enter
- If you have an older "Non-Power"
Macintosh: /pub/navigator/3.02/shipping/english/mac/68k/standard/
- If you have a Power Macintosh:
/pub/navigator/3.02/shipping/english/mac/ppc/standard/
- This will take you through
the directory tree of Netscape's ftp server, leaving you with the desired
directory active.
- When you have finished filling
in the required fields, click the OK button.
Step 5-3: Downloading Navigator
After clicking OK, Fetch will
connect to Netscape's ftp server. When Fetch is finished connecting
it should show a screen something like this (Netscape changes their site
structure around with each new version so the graphics may not be exactly
like what you see, but the text of this document will be correct):
The
file we want to get should be the first one in the list, netscape3.02_EX.bin.
To download the file to your hard drive, you can select the file name
(single click) and then click the Get File... button. If you have System
7.5.3 or later you can also drag and drop files to and from the window
(uploading and downloading). The location the selected icon/s is dropped
to will become it's destination. This will start the file transfer process.
For the purposes of this tutorial, we will assume that you are saving
the file to the desktop. The status section on the right side of the
window will show how much of the file has been transferred and how long
it w ill take (you may need to adjust the window width to make this appear).
Fetch has excellent online
help available by selecting Fetch Help from the Apple Help (?)
Menu.
Step 5-4: Installing Netscape
Navigator
Fetch should convert the downloaded
netscape3.02_EX.bin file into an installer file called netscape3.02
and place it on the desktop.
Double click the netscape3.02
icon and choose the install button to allow
the program to unpack the programs to your hard drive.
Once the installer finishes
it will launch the setup program.
Netscape will now lead you
through a series of prompts in order to configure the Netscape browser.
Follow along with the prompts for a complete installation of Netscape.
When you are asked if you wish to continue by selecting the Netscape Web
site, answer Yes. The Netscape Navigator browser will launch and take
you directly to the Netscape Communications Corporation Web site. You
are almost done!
Step 5-5: Go to the Northwest
Advantage Web Site
Now that you have successfully
connected to the Internet, and downloaded and installed Netscape, your
next step will be to configure the rest of your Internet software. There
are detailed instructions on how to set up your software to access electronic
mail, FTP services and much more on our comprehensive Web site.
With Netscape still
running, click on the OPEN button and type "www.nwadv.com " as
shown then click OPEN:
That's it! You are on your
way. All other information about Northwest Advantage and your Internet
software configurations can be found on our Web site. Browse the site
for the specific information you need. You may also wish to check out
our Frequently Asked Questions area, where many common questions and topics
are covered.
Tip: To Navigate a Web Site
- When the cursor turns from
an arrow to a pointing hand, this means you can click on the highlighted
word or image to link to another resource.
- A Web page can be more than
one screen-full of information. Use the scroll bars along the bottom
and right side of the Netscape window to navigate past the window borders.
- Use the Back and
Forward buttons to quickly move through Web pages you have visited
before.
- Graphics take longer to
load than text. You do not have to wait for a graphic to fully load
before you can start navigating the Web site.
